Women's Suffrage

Popular Culture

It was the 1920's that women

were granted the freedom to

vote. It was also the time where

women took their actions one

step farther and the debate over

the approval of women being

able to take birth control, came

into play.

Prohibition

Standard of living

During the 1920's it

was very, very

common to see women,

also known as "Flapper

Girls" wandering around.

They were very common

and popular due to the up-beat dancing and social scenes that took place during this time. Flapper Girls where women full of life, with crisp makeup, and over the top outfits, these women were dressed not only for the fun in it, but definitely to be seen.

Organized Crime

Due to the prohibition, men

found that selling alcohol

illegally would be a good

business idea. So organized crime became a

widespread frenzy. We now call it "The Mob". These men did bring in a lot of money, such as Al Capone, but with that came a sentencing that most did receive and that was life in prison.

Mobsters

Prohibition

Red Scare

All alcohol was banned during the

1920's, because of religious figure influences and commities fighting against the morals of alcohol. Which brought "speak eases" into play which were secret bars people would go to.

The Red Scare was the refer to

the fear of communism in the U.S during

the 1920's. It is said that there is over 150,000

anarchist or communists in the U.S in the 1920's alone. This represented about .1% of the overall population, which doesn't seem like a lot, but it was enough to make people a little on edge. The KKK is a good example of a communist group that people feared.

Nativism and Racial Intolerance

Standard of Living

Standard of living at this

time is what we would now

consider the "American

Dream".

The standard of living is basically what was expected from people and that was a perfect wife, a successful husband, children and a clean home to come home to. This in many ways did put a lot of pressure on people, which commonly, brought a lot of women into depression.

Overall, the 1920's was full of glamor, but there were definitely some concerning times that not only made people on edge but in the long run didn't help the economy. Such ad organized crime, the red scare and the prohibition (led to many not needed outburst). Little did people know, that the roaring twenties, would soon become the struggling thirties.

Nativism is the political position of demanding a favored status for certain established inhabitants of a nation as compared to claims of newcomers or immigrants. Nativism was basically the act to try to lower the political or legal status of specific ethnic or cultural groups. One plan used in the 1920's was the literacy test, where people would exclude workers who could not read or write their own foreign language. There main focus on Nativism was towards Catholics, Jews and Europeans. These acts went along with the racial intolerance based on the fact that people could not stand someone else being different from them. And very many people made it tough on people of a different race, religion or belief, because they struggled with the idea of their world not being perfect because someone was different from them.

Harlem Renaissance and Immigration Quotas

The Harlem Renaissance was

a big deal in Harlem, NY,

during the 1920's. Jazz and

Blues music was very popular

at the time and it was a time

where people where very happy and go with the flow. There was often times a lot of dancing and singing and at the same time, Harlem was becoming very multicultural. Many people (specially immigrants) found themselves moving into Harlem.
