Charles Whitman
Charles Whitman was one of the first documented school shooters. Charles may have made the conscious decision to aim a deer rifle at people and shoot them, but he wasn't necessarily free to make that decision, for
various reasons. For starters, he had a hypothalamus tumor growing in his brain. This caused him to be mentally unstable, have aggressive impulses, lose control of his emotions and basically turn into a psychopath. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but didn't care, because of this tumor. Another reason for him not having a free decision is because he had a very hard family life and upbringing. It's not a valid reason for him to do what he did, but it caused him to grow up thinking he was worthless, which influenced him to do what he did.
Rene Descartes
Not free
Rene Descartes theory outlines that our mind is free and our body is not. our mind simply controls out body. I feel that this is not enitirely true. Our minds are not always free, due to various factors such as mental illness or disability. some are free and some are not, but the fact that some are not makes us still not entirely free.

~ Abused = choice Addiction= No choice.
~ The note showed that his actions were meticulated and well thought of.
~ Him writing the note showed him being morally responsible for his actions.
~ Excusable decisions under the defense of mental incapability should be impulsive because the mind is takes over the body.
~ Descartes (Dualism.) Mind takes over the body.
Even though he had an unstable foundation for upbringing, why did he choose to achieve so much success? Could he have stretched this side of him for the rest of his life?
Carly's story
Carly is a teenage girl whom is diagnosed with autism. She communicates by typing on a computer. She is just as smart as any other teenage girl, but she says her body disables her from living and communicating normally, and that she wishes her dad could spend a day in her body, so he would understand how hard it is for her. She may have been free to make the decision to type, but she did not choose to have her disability. she is not entirely free, because having autism makes it more difficult to do everyday things. she may have free will, but having autism prevents her from doing alot of things, and makes it harder for her to live and communicate normally, which makes her not free.

"Genie", the feral/ isolated child
Genie is the name given to a girl who had spent the first 13 years of her life locked in one room, until the police discovered her in 1971. her family neglected her severely. she had no human contact at all, exempt for when someone would bring her food or change her diaper. Nobody knew she existed, not even her mother, because her mother was blind and her father kept her a secret from the world because he was ashamed of her. This abuse and neglect caused her to never learn to speak and have no emotional control. she still cannot learn to speak, because her brain never developed properly due to the lack of stimulation it received as a child. Genie is not free, because her brain is only partially developed, making it scientifically impossible for her to learn basic things, because she is already past the stages in which she can learn them. Language needs to be introduced to a child between the ages of 2 and 6 in order for their brain to develop enough to allow them to use it down the road. Genie was not introduced to language at all until she was almost 14. Genie is not free to learn certain things, like language, because she physically cant due to the horrible way in which she grew up. She may have the free will to try, and to learn what is possible to learn, but in conclusion, she is not free.
Sigmund Freud's illustration
We all have hurdles. We can freely choose to break free and
have these hurdles be a driving force for success and victory.

" Your voice will find its way out. Mine did."
" I know what is right and wrong I just have a fight with my brain over it."
This is a voice of someone who sees herself as free.
Sigmund Freud's stages of development
Sigmund Freud has came to the conclusion that there are 5 stages to a child's development that need nurturing as the human matures, and if they don't get the proper nurturing, it could resolve in problems later in life. for example, If an infant sucks on things too much or too little while growing, it could result in bad personality traits down the road, such as drug usage, pessimism and aggression. people who have trouble growing through each stage as children are not free because they cannot help the fact that they are the way they are. If they grew up in a bad environment, chances are that they didnt get proper nurturing through these stages, causing them to permanentley scarred, even in a slight way, and affects how they act for the rest of thier life. they are not free.
