Carbohydrates

Proteins

Lipids

Nucleic Acid

  • Carbohydrates are related to the food pyramid because they're in grains, milk, fruits, and vegetables, all things that have the sugars we need to have the energy we need.
  • About 45-65% of your diet should be this
  • Carbohydrates are stored in your liver and muscles after being your body breaks it down in your digestive system
  • 10-35% of a person's diet should be protein
  • It is in all cells of the body, especially in your muscles. A couple of examples are in your organs, hair, and skins.
  • Also known as carbs
  • Monomer ex: simple sugars like glucose
  • Polymer ex: starches like in potatoes
  • They are the main source for the body to gain energy. They also make up the cell wall in plants which allow them to grow tall
  • Monomer example: amino acids
  • Polymer example: finger nails
  • Proteins protect our body from antigens ("foreign invaders"), responsible for our movement, speed up chemical reactions, move molecules from one place to the other, and provide support.
  • They relate to the food pyramid because they are found in meats, grains, nuts, fruits, and vegetables, all major groups in the food pyramid that help us have the strength to live life.

Macromolecules Project

This is important to humans because nucleic acids are the building blocks of all living organisms. DNA, a nucleic acid, sends cells information to survive and create offspring. We also wouldn't be multicellular organisms without RNA, which copies DNA's info and creates new cells.

  • Milk, meats, fast food, baked goods, and nuts all have lipids in them.
  • Lipids are found in cell membrane, and especially found in fat and your brain along with numerous other places like your skin, eyes, and saliva
  • Monomer ex: fatty acids
  • Polymer ex: steroids
  • They are a source of stored energy, insulate us to keep our body a normal body temperature, protect internal organs, and produce hormones for the body
  • 20-35% of our daily diet should be this
  • Lipids are in the sweets part of the food pyramid, along with other groups like meats and dairy when the fat isn't taken out or cooked with fatty oils
  • monomer ex: sugar residue
  • polymer ex: DNA
  • The main function is to store and transmit genetic information and use that to direct the synthesis of new protein
  • Nucleic acids don't appear on the food pyramid because they are not any food group assigned to them. Instead of coming from things we consume, they are automatically in our cells, like DNA is by heredity
