POPULAR EXAMPLES

OF WRATH:

Past and Present

THE WRATHFUL & THE FALLEN ANGELS

  • Phlegyas

In Canto 8, Phlegyas transports Virgil & Dante across the river. He's somewhat like an “employee” of this circle, his job is to transport souls from the fourth circle to the fifth via boat. Phleygyas set fire to the temple of Apollo when he discovered a god had raped his daughter. The wrath he displayed during this event placed him in this circle.

  • Filippo Argenti

While Plegyas was transporting Dante & Virgil across the Styx river, Filippo rose from the water covered in filth and tried to reach out to Dante. Dante recognizes him in disgust. Filippo and Dante's are enemies. Filippo took all of Dante's possesions when he was exiled from Florence, and he rebuked any chance of Dante coming back from exile. Dante berates Filippo once he recognizes him and curses him to further torture and agony. Immediately, a multitude of the sinners in the river arose and ripped Filippo to pieces.

Allegory

Genghis Khan

Infamous Mongol Emperor known to be a psychotic killer and obsessed with power

"Racing towards them, fast as a flying arrow"

  • Phlegyas is sailing across the river at a high speed.

"Blew his rage amoung those muddy marshes like a cheat deceived or like a fool at some imagined wrong"

  • Phylegyas was blowing out his rage into a river full of sinners who were being punished for rage.

Dante shows nothing but hostility and cruelty towards Filippo Argenti during their encounter.

  • This encounter reflects Dante's sin. He's being wrathful towards Argenti in the circle which punishes those who have committed wrathfulness.

Adolf Hitler

German Dictator & Mastermind of the Holocaust

Circle 6

The City of Dis

Fallen Angels

  • Once Dante & Virgil travel across the Styx river, the gate to the 6th circle is also the gate to the city of Dis.
  • Dis is the capital city of Hell.
  • Dis is also the gateway to the lower realm of Hell.
  • Dis is characterized by flaming red towers and a massive iron gate guarded by fallen angels.
  • When Dante & Virgil arrive at the 6th circle, they're approached by fallen angels.
  • The gate of Dis is guarded by fallen angels.
  • Dante's Inferno refers to them as "creatures of ultimate evil"
  • These angels rebelled against God.
  • As much as Virgil tried to persuade them, The angels refused to let Dante and Virgil enter the gates of Dis and into the lower realm of Hell because Dante is still living.
