Elizabeth Bennett

Feminism

Elizabeth Bennett and Mr.Darcy, both protagonists of "Pride and Prejudice." Both have different standards to full fill while living in the nineteenth century. Lizzy is considered to be somewhat rude and not considered the ideal woman. Elizabeth's connection to the twentieth century are her qualities and how she defines the standard quiet lady. Mr.Darcy is considered the Ideal man. His wealth and mannerism exhibit the masculinity of the nineteenth century. Compare and contrast both societal expectations between both genders within their time.

Mr. Darcy

Masculinity

“ We are each of an unsocial, taciturn disposition, unwilling to speak, unless we expect to say something that will amaze the whole room” (Austen, 131).

  • She knows societal expectations of women and expresses it in a way that is witty.
  • She hints that women's opinions are not asked for because they are seen as inferior.
  • The unjust inequality.

“ Mr. Darcy soon drew the attention of the room by his fine, tall person, handsome features, noble mien--his having ten thousand a year” (Austen, 39)

“Darcy, was clever. He was at the same time haughty, reserved and fastidious, and his manners though well bred, were not inviting”(Austen, 48).

  • His physical appearance is a plus with the large amount of his wealth
  • Even though he is considered to be a self-centered person he still has noble features.

Elizabeth's connection to the twentieth century

The Idealist nineteenth century man

Upon my word, you give your opinion very decidedly for so young a person” (Austen, 206). Lady Catherine’s impression of Elizabeth was blunt and surprised about Elizabeth's honesty.

“we naturally [have the] privilege of Elizabeth's viewpoint, experiencing the novel through her eyes” (Morgan).

  • In the perspective of Elizabeth Bennett she gives her opinion, no beating around the bush
  • Which result, she challenges Lady Catherine (high ranking aristocrat)
  • Given her opinion to a high ranked civilian is a big deal.

"His having ten thousand a year. The gentlemen pronounced him to be a fine figure of a man” Even though Darcy does not have a title he is still very wealthy" (Austen, 39).

“He always has a tendency to judge too hastily and harshly, and his high birth and wealthy make him overly proud and overly conscious of his social status” (Gao, 4).

  • In the 19th century, because he has no title. He is still considered desirable by women.
  • Because of his position, even though Darcy is seen as rude. It is mostly accepted because he is a man. Double standards saves his reputation and his freedom.

Binaries

Arranged marriages vs. Love

nineteenth century vs. twentieth century.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Elizabeth is a character that knows her position in society and somewhat rejects the notion. Because of her background and her self-education, The double standard of men as to the expectation of women, they are allowed to do a lot of things. Even be rude but it won't tarnish their reputation. The inequality of the 1800's is justified that because women are weak, they will not be able to stand the work that men do.
