Spanish Influence In Trinidad and Tobago

Iain's thoughts on the spanish

Idriss's Thoughts

After my research, I learned that I am a product of migration. I say this because of my heritage. My grandparents and great grandparents once lived in China, Portugal, India, and Venezuela. It's their migration to Trinidad that played an important role in my heritage, and now I have a deeper appreciation of the sacrifices our ancestors made, for the development of Trinidad and Tobago.

I think when the Spanish moved to Trinidad it was good and bad because lots of people died because of sicknesses and fights with the government. It's also good that they did move here because they introduced many different things to trini culture.

Pedro's thoughts

Matias's Thoughts

I think the Spanish discovered Trinidad and brought very good and bad things. Some bad things are:Diseases. But they also brought a new world here like culture and inventions.

I think that it was good that the Spanish came to Trinidad because they brought a lot of goods and were more modern, to show Trinidadians new inventions and new clothes.

Chayim's Thoughts

Problems Caused by the Spanish Migration to Trinidad

I think it is good that the Spanish came, as they introduced a lot of new things that Trinidad and Tobago have now. Some things are, the food we eat, our religion, our dress, our music, and our language.

Bibliography

When the Spanish arrived in Trinidad, with their Captain Christopher Columbus they killed many of the arawaks with foreign diseases. Since they were catholic, the Spanish invited the French who then were told to bring african slaves. Also the Spanish disagreed with the British when they arrived causing war between each other leaving some of the slaves who had to fight to the death.

The Spanish came from Spain. They came to the western hemisphere in 1492 when Christopher Columbus went to America.

Impact of Spanish Culture on Trinidad

Traditions:

  • Parang is from the word parranda and parranda means 'out parting' which is from the spanish. We play parang for Christmas in Trinidad. Parang also comes from parang revellers, this is a real spanish word, which means 'party lover'.

Dances:

  • Castillian Waltz is a dance that people Trinidad and Tobago like to enjoy at Christmas.
  • Another dance from the spanish heritage is Maypole which is performed by kids dancing around a pole with ribbons. At the end, the pole is beautifully decorated with ribbons.

Music:

  • Musical instruments such as the cuatros, guitars, maracas are all spanish heritage instruments and are used to play many different songs like the song for Maypole.

Religion:

  • The Roman Catholic religion is influenced by spanish culture as well. This is also a religion practiced in Trinidad & Tobago. During church services prayers are offered to a number of different Saints.

Food:

  • There are many popular foods that are influenced by spanish heritage for example carambola, sapadilla, granadilla, cassava bread, sancocho or sancoche, and pastelles.

  • The spanish influenced language in Trinidad. Approximately 60,000 people in Trinidad speak spanish.

Clothes:

  • One of the dresses worn by Trinidadians is influenced by spanish heritage and it is called the Traje de Faralao, this is a polka dot dress also some can be striped.

What factors influenced their migration

  • Columbus's discovery is significant as it marks the first sighting of the island, and confirmation that the world was not flat.
  • Columbus sailed for King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain in hope of finding El Dorado, the City of Gold. The Spanish first came to Trinidad looking for gold to loot. This was Columbus's third expedition on May 30, 1498.
  • Spanish missions were established as a part of the Spanish Colonization. In 1687 the Catalan Capuchin Friars came to Trinidad to convert the indigenous population. Their hope was that religious conversion might be a way to control the Amerindians.
  • It was not 30 years after, Christopher Columbus claimed the island for Spain, before true colonization of Trinidad began.
  • The Spanish King, acting on the advice of Roume de St. Laurent issued the historic Cedula of Population, designed to attract immigrants to the island. The terms of the Cedula offered free grants of land to citizens of any land friendly to Spain.
  • At present many spanish migrate to Trinidad for education and for work.
