What is an active volcano?
An active volcano is one that is known to have erupted in recent times, or which is likely to erupt again. For example, Mount Etna in Italy.
There are two main volcano warning systems - colour codes, and alert levels. Warning systems are specific for each volcano. It is impossible to predict the date of an eruption. Volcano warning systems are based on a probability of an eruption or hazard. Here is the chart for Indonesia Volcano Warning system, they use alert levels.

Throat - Entrance of a volcano. The part of the conduit that ejects lava and volcanic ash.
Ash - Fragments of lava or rock smaller than 2 mm in size that are blasted into the air by volcanic explosions.
Ash Cloud - A cloud of ash formed by volcanic explosions.
