Apprenticeship in Victorian England

By: Alec Peterson

Indentures

Indentures must be signed to form an apprenticeship.

The apprentice usually serves for a 7 year term but can agree upon a shorter one.

Handicraft is the most reliable job for an apprentice.

They must be able to do all the duties and answer all questions.

They receive instructions in the profession, art, or occupation they serve for.

The apprentice must be capable of doing that job, not just there for the earnings.

PREMIUM$

Premiums are proportional to the wages which the trade affords.

Premiums are not governed by stated tariff.

WORKING TIMES

Apprentices cannot work excessive amounts of time.

It is illegal to work Sundays, unless the apprentice makes more than $25, then nothing can be done about it.

TRADES

Popular trades during the Victorian times were:

  • Blacksmith
  • Tinsmith
  • Iron Foundry
  • Cobbler
  • and Leatherworking
