What is discrimination?
Discrimination is treating
a person differently based on their
race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, national origin, or religion.
One way is hate crimes.
Hate Crimes are crimes committed simply because someone is different in some way.
Oscar Grant III was shot and killed by an officer in 2009 after apparently resisting arrest.
The officer warned him that he would taze him, but Oscar pleaded not to be tazed. The other officer yelled that Oscar was reaching for his hip, so the first officer jumped back and shot
Oscar.
Why Oscar was under arrest in the first place is unknown.
But how do we stop discrimination?
The first step to stopping discrimination is recognizing it.
Many companies have a department
designed to help keep discrimination in the workplace to a minimum.
If a company refuses to hire someone based on age, race, or gender, they're subject to fine.
