Spanish -American war

Timeline

1898

It is not until the 10nth of December when the Spanish-American War did not officially ended with the Treaty of Paris that signed the U.S. and Spain.

THE WAR IS OVER!

1898

In April, 24, Spain declared the war to the United States. However, Spain was not ready for this war so in the first battle, the U.S. destroyed the spanish ships and killed more than three hundred sailors. This battle took part in the Manila Bay.

In July, the U.S forces attacked Spain on the southern coast of Cuba.

This victory made the U.S. take a part of Santiago de Cuba

July, 1898

The last battle of the war took place in the Caribbean.

After this defeat, Spain agreed to stop fighting.

The U.S. signed a treaty with Spain in which allowed U.S. to take possession of Guam, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico for $20 million.

February, 1898

The battleship of the U.S., Maine, sank in the Havana harbor. Even though America did it, they blamed Spain.

America sank this battleship because the U.S. wanted to trade with Cuba, and if Cuba was a colony the United States could not deal with Cuba.

Spain agreed to an armistice, which will finished the fighting with Cuba. However, Spain only agreed to allow Cuba to have limited self-government.

But, also, the U.S. Congress gave President William McKinley the right to use force against Spain.

A day after, William McKinley, declared the war to Spain, as Americans thought he was a weak president.

Congress responds to McKinley's war speech with the Teller Amendment. The amendment, which McKinley signs, says that the U.S. cannot annex Cuba.

Spain colonies caricature

In the first caricature, we can see that in the right we have "The liberty" which is saving a Cuban native from the slavery of the Spanish government.

And in the second caricature we can see the uncle Sam protecting a women native with the flag, from been harassed.

With these caricatures, the U.S showed the situation of the natives in the colonies and how the U.S. would help them.

1895

Spain had colonies in the south american since Christopher Columbus discovered the land. However, Spain started to lose colonies and Cuba wanted to be independent, in 1895. As it was a hard work for Cuba to win its independence, the U.S. got involved by publishing things against Spain.
