- the actual word means "Fat Tuesday"

- it is also known as "Shrove Tuesday Carnival," which is an annual festival; this year it will take place on February 12, 2013

- it marks the last opportunity for fun and feasting before 40 days of "self-denial"

Festivities begin at the beginning of February, leading up to Mardi Gras day, and consist of parades, dancing in the street, costumes and masked balls!

During the parade trinkets, like beads or doubloons, are tossed to the crowds from the parade floats

Parades happen throughout the world. Some of the most famous celebrations are held in Nice (France), Cologne (Germany), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and New Orleans (USA)

Mardi Gras' colors are green, gold, and purple. Green symbolizes faith, gold symbolizes power, and purple symbolizes justice!

- in Binche, Belgium people dress up as clowns, called gilles

- they often wear ostrich feathers on their heads and dance in the streets

- during parades the clowns will throw oranges to the crowd
