THE CIVIL WAR

Similarities in Strategies

  • All of the military thinking of the day was influenced by Napoleon.
  • Almost all armies used Napoleonic warfare

"It was Napoleons strategy that when 2-3 armies begin a camping to conquer a territory they should converge at a place away from the enemy. This tactic was seen so often in the civil war that a compilation of examples would seem endless here."

Confederate Strategy

"President Jefferson Davis proclaimed his strategy to be one of 'offensive-defensive.' The strategy in fact was one of defending all resources,Davis Sworn In stockpiling supplies and taking the offensive when the supply situation warranted or the opportunity was provided by the enemy."

Southern (Confederate) Strategy

  • Offensive- defensive strategy
  • Wanted to wear out the North
  • Use a similar strategy to the one that George Washington used.
  • Also wanted to get European support.
  • The war ended at the town of Appomattox when General Robert E. Lee surrendered
  • The North had won the war
  • As you can see, military strategy had an enormous impact on the war's outcome.

Military Strategy

"Strategy, unfortunately, is a very unpopular science, even among soldiers, requiring both in practice and in demonstration constant and careful study of the map, the closest computation of time and space, a grasp of many factors, and the strictest attention to the various steps in the problems it presents. At the same time, it is a science which repays the student, although he may have no direct concern with military affairs; for not only will a comprehension of its immutable principles add a new interest to the records of stirring times and great achievements, but will make him a more useful citizen."

-Stonewall Jackson

Military Strategy

  • The most important element in the outcome of the war was military strategy.
  • It was the most important factor because of the uneven amount of soldiers on each side. If the South did not have an impressive strategy it couldn't hope to match the North and if the North's strategy was not clever enough, they could not expect to conquer General Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy.
  • First, I will explain the strategies of both the Union and Confederate armies.

This quote shows how a naval commander, Gideon Welles, feels that the Union should attack. He believes that they should be aggressive and help to create a feeling of anti-secession across the nation.

-Gideon Welles, naval office in civil war

"Instead of halting on the borders, building entrenchments, and repelling indiscriminately and treating as Rebels--enemies--all, Union as well as disunion, men . . . we should. . . penetrate their territory, nourish and protect the Union sentiment, and create and strengthen a national feeling counter to Secession.. . . Instead of holding back, we should be aggressive and enter their territory,"

Union Strategy Quote

  • Blockade Southern trading posts.
  • Gain control of Mississippi
  • Used all-out warfare tactic
  • wanted to keep border states in the Union
  • Split up and disorganize the South
  • Called it the "Anaconda" plan

Union Military Strategy

In other Words........

"'Blockade' of Southern ports, a strong thrust down the Mississippi Valley with a large force, and the establishment of a line of strong Federal positions there would isolate the disorganized Confederate nation 'and bring it to terms.'"

-as Revealed by General George B. McClellan

Anaconda Plan

The Civil War

  • The Civil War was a famous battle fought between two sides that America split up into. The Union and the Confederacy.
  • This battle lasted about four years from 1861-1865.
  • The battle consisted of many new features and weaponry such as cannons and ironclads.
  • However, one of the key elements that determined the actual results of the war was military strategy.
