Presently, the US and China have a pretty good relationship. They still have arguments, like what the best way to solve a problem is. The two countries are still dealing with North Korea. As a symbol of their ongoing relationship, the President of the US visits China every few years.
North Korea has used nuclear weapons to threaten countries. The US and China have worked together against this threat for many years. The two countries have also worked simultaneously on the United Nations Security Council, making unanimous decisions to put sanctions on North Korea. Every year congress has to approve China's trade status, but following the Tienanmen incident they were not eager to do so. In 1991-1992 congress decided to change the normal China trade status, but it was vetoed by the Bush administration. President Clinton, in 1994, improved the relationship. The relationship has continued with little bumps in the road. After the terrorist attack on the US on September 11, the two countries worked together against terrorism. More bumps were in the road, when China and the US argued over the United Nations Security Council voting regarding Iraq and challenges with Taiwan.
Ever since China was established in 1949, their citizens have lacked major freedoms. The government regulates almost everything from freedoms like press and speech to religion and association. The only political party allowed in China is The Chinese Communist Party. Their laws are badly worded, which also favors the prosecutions’ side. Although China's economy is growing, the people rarely see the benefit. Overall, China is lacking human rights.
When the People's Republic of China was started in 1949, China and the US didn't have a relationship because the US recognized the Taiwan government as the Chinese government instead of the China government. The relationship became worse during the Korean War around the early 1950s; however, in the late 1960s China and US came together against the Soviet Union. After that the US acknowledged that Taiwan was apart of China, which improved the relationship. Although US recognized Taiwan as apart of China they continued unofficial relations with China. In 1989, following the Tienanmen Incident, the US and other countries put sanctions on China Countries were angered because the Tienanmen incident was where pro-democracy protesters, mostly students, were massacred because they had protested the communist government.
