The Mayan people thought that the four different colors of corn (white, yellow, black, and red) represented the four directions on Earth: north, east, south, and west.

Along with the corn god, the Mayan people also believed in a rain god. They thought that this god gave them the water that made their corn grow.

Corn was very important to the Mayans.

Since there was a lot of it, they didn't have to worry about farming, and they could do other things.

Mayans believed that they were made from corn.

In their creation story, a wildcat, a coyote, a parrot, and a crow find corn to make the first Mayans out of.

Then, Tepew and Q'uk'umatz discuss the creation of the first humans. Their skin would be made of light-colored corn.

Next, Grandmother Ixmukane ground the ears of corn to make a thin, watery oatmeal to give the first four men muscle and power.

They had many gods that they believed in, and, since corn was so important to them, the corn god was a sign representing Mayan kings.
