In Italy, as well as other European countries, they realize that they have had problems with being environmentally friendly. While I was In Italy, it seems as if they have been stepping up there game to be a more sustainable nation.
although Italy has shown many examples of sustainability, there are also many unsustainable elements that I noticed. They are plaguing the environment in Italy and need to be corrected to leave a smaller ecological footprint.
In Venice, the majority of streets were lined
with clothes lines such as these. This conserves energy by not using dryers, which is a plus for the environment.
One fairly large environmental problem that I encountered in Italy, and specifically in Venice, was garbage in the streets, especially cigarette butts. The picture below does shows just a segment of stairs, just imagine it on every street!
In Venice, on all of the streets, you will notice holes in the ground. These holes are meant for runoff from rain or when the city floods. For these purposes they are fine. However, when there is rain or flooding, it carries the some of the excess trash on the streets into the drains, which lead strait to the ocean. On top of this, I observed multiple accounts of shopkeepers sweeping trash from inside and around their shops, directly into these drains. Thus, the ocean is becoming polluted.
Bolonia, Italy, is the home of the Ducati manufacturing plant. I have always been a fan of Ducati, so while in Italy we took a tour of the factory. While there I analyzed what I could see to determine if their processes were sustainable. After doing further research online, I came to the conclusion that they are a very sustainable company. Mainly due to incorporation of Atlas Copco, a company that increases sustainable productivity and reduces carbon footprint
In the U.S.A. we have heavy emission regulations on all automobiles. This cuts down on our ecological footprint greatly. In Italy, they still have regulations, however these regulation are no where near as strict as ours. So although there footprint is minimized they could be doing more.
Italy, along with other european countries, has put a complete ban on the use of plastics bags within the country. Plastic bags are a major source of pollution. Which is caused both during the manufacturing process and after they have been used and become waste. So banning them should reduce a large amount of pollution considering over 20 billion plastic bags were consumed per year in Italy
Italy has many aspects of sustainability as well as many negative elements that harm the environment. The Creation of a more sustainable world is crucial. If we are not trying as hard as we can to reduce our ecological footprint to nothing, then soon, there will be nothing left on this world for us to consume. I know that it may sound absurd, but we are depleting our resources at an alarming rate and damaging the environment. As a sustainable manufacturer my main focus is to make manufacturing processes more environmentally friendly, while still being profitable, and that is exactly what I plan to do.
