An Aerospace History

What is a space probe?

An un-piloted spacecraft used to make observations and send information back to Earth.

What kind of information??

Current & Future Missions

NASA has 33 missions planned

and ongoing past 2020

EJSM

(Europa Jupiter System Mission

Goal: Characterize the Processes Within the Jupiter System.

Goal: Determine if the Jupiter System Harbors Habitable Worlds

Goal: Characterize the Processes Within the Jupiter System.

The spacecraft would study the four moons discovered by Galileo Galilei (right) in 1610. They are Io, Europa, Callisto and Ganymede.

* Characterize sub-surface oceans

* Characterize the ice shells and any subsurface water

* Determine global surface compositions and chemistry

* Understand the formation of surface features

CHANDRA

Chandra allows scientists from around the world to obtain X-ray images of exotic environments to help understand the structure and evolution of the universe.

Hubble Space Telescope

OSIRIS-REx

OSIRIS-REx will be the first U.S. mission to carry samples from an asteroid back to Earth.

Asteroid 1999 RQ36 (above) is approximately 1,900 feet in diameter or roughly the size of five football fields.

First Orbiter

HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

After 4 years, OSIRIS-REx will approach the primitive, near Earth asteroid designated 1999 RQ36. Once within three miles of the asteroid, will begin surface mapping. The spacecraft gradually will move closer and extend to collect more than 2ounces of material for return to Earth.
