Romeo & Juliet - Act 4 Scene 2-4

By: Anna, Edward, Evan, Joshua & Pearl

Why a Mime?

  • Unique and catches the audience's attention
  • Brand new experience for us
  • Our scenes contain a lot of emotions and we thought mime could play that out.
  • Modern day clothing to show how the play would look like in today's point of view

Writing Style

  • Shakespeare is a Iambic pentameter writer
  • Dialogue with literacy devices and old slang English
  • Blank verse ("unrhymed iambic pentameter")
  • In Act 4 Scene 2- 4 blank verse is used (a less-fancier way of saying “unrhymed iambic pentameter.”)
  • First of all, based on the flat reading we can tell that Shakespeare likes to use slang English such as slef-will’d (Act 4 Scene 2 line 14).
  • Blank verse is unrhymed which makes it easier to fit slang words into the scene.
  • The whole scene contains dialogues and have no descriptive words that show the characters' thoughts (Act 4 Scene 2)
  • In Act 4 Scene 3, the scene mostly writes of the weakness of Juliet; blank verse would be better and easier to describe that.
  • At Shakespeare's time, the society wanted word choices with deep meanings.
  • They love to hear descriptions because they want to learn; therefore, a lot of literacy devices have been used.

Foreshadowing - "I’ll have this knot knit up tomorrow morning." (ACT 4 SCENE 2, Capulet)

Hyperbole - "I have a faint cold fear thrills through my veins That almost freezes up the heat of life." (ACT 4 SCENE 3, Juliet)

"All our whole city is much bound to him.."(ACT 4 SCENE 2, Capulet)

Repetition - "Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here’s drink – I drink to thee." (ACT 4 SCENE 3, Juliet)

"Come, stir, stir, stir!- Make haste, make haste." (ACT 4 SCENE 4, Capulet)

Key Writing Techniques

Juliet:

-Scared and intimidated by death

-She was very afraid of drinking the potion, scared that it would take her life.

-Proved that her love for Romeo is powerful and true

-Overcame the fear of death and drank the potion

Capulet:

-Truly loves Juliet

-Forgives Juliet as soon as she admits that she is wrong.

- Cares a lot about the wedding and Paris.

Important Speech

Development to Character

Themes

True love: The true love of Juliet to Romeo is visible through her willingness to drink the potion regardless what will happen to her. Juliet lied to her father therefore disrupted the great chain of beings, in order to push the wedding one day forward so that the plan will work.

Love vs Fate: In the dream of Juliet before she drank the potion, the fighting between Tybalt and Romeo symbolized the never ending feud between Juliet’s love and her fate

  • Juliet’s speech (happens right after Nurse and Lady Capulet leaves)
  • Juliet speaks to herself
  • Repetition of worrisome questions are used throughout the speech
  • This technique shows a change within Juliet’s character
  • The development of a more rational Juliet begins as she considers what will happen if she drinks the potion, rather than acting upon Friar’s advice without thinking
  • Imagery is also present (through the use of descriptions)
  • Juliet uses imagery to show the audience how terrible the tomb might be
  • This helps to show true love

because even when faced with

such a dreadful circumstance,

true love drives Juliet to act

courageously in order to be

with Romeo

Dramatic Significance

Summary

  • Act 4 scenes 2-4 connects the previous scene of the plan and the aftermath of Juliet's fake death
  • Plan wise: Friar Lawrence's advice for Juliet is going to come in effect as Juliet drinks the potion that will fake her death, allowing her to escape
  • Also creates suspense as Juliet becomes unconscious; therefore, not being able to help in resolving the problem; all up to Romeo and Friar Lawrence
  • These portions of the play are the rising action to the tragic climax—the death of Romeo and Juliet.
  • Juliet's worries foreshadow that the plan might not work smoothly and makes the reader/audience wonder: what will happen next?
  • These scenes fit on the rising action in Freytag’s pyramid; all the events that happened complicated the plot and builds up the tension towards the final climax.

  • Capulet is still angry at Juliet for not following his wishes
  • Nevertheless, he continues on with the preparation of the upcoming wedding (asking servants to find cooks etc.)
  • Capulet asks the Nurse where Juliet went and finds out she went to see the Friar
  • Juliet comes back with a plan and fools her father into believing that she learned her lesson
  • Capulet’s mood changes from anger to happiness after listening to Juliet and becomes more excited for the wedding
  • Juliet heads to her room and asks both her mom and the Nurse to not bother her tonight, using the excuse that she has to pray and that her mother will be busy preparing for tomorrow
  • After the exit of the Nurse and Lady Capulet, Juliet starts to feel fear
  • Juliet begins to wonder about all sorts of negative possibilities that could happen if she drinks from the vile
  • While debating over if she should drink from the potion or not, Juliet’s love for Romeo finally made her decide to take the potion
