The main reasons cows move are:
- To communicate
- Warnings
- To show anticipation
- To show stress and/or hunger
Communication: The main use of mooing is for communication. Cows and calves use this all the time. Like humans have names, each cows call varies and so does her calf's. When the cow is trying to find her calf, she will moo the calf's "name" and the calf will moo back.
Stress/Hunger: When cows are stressed or hungry, they will bellow. This low frequency call is one that is easily heard by cows and is also used in warning calls.
YES!!! Many people believe all cows do is 'moo'. This Is Wrong. Just like birds have different noises, so do cows. There is bellowing, snorting, grunting, mooing, and mering (how I describe a certain noise).

Anticipation: Believe it or not, cows are very smart animals. They remember sounds such as one of a tractor or certain kind of car. When they hear a noise they know, they will bellow (learn later) and let the other cows know.
Warning: Cows also have warning calls. I call these "mering". It is not a moo or bellow. This is a high pitched sound that alerts the herd when there is danger around. They also snort at you (not like a pig though).
