The Bantu migration formed and influenced many groups and societies in Africa. It spread all over Africa, from the sahara desert, to South Africa. At least 500 dialects of the Bantu language are found in languages today. The most commonly used language in Africa with traces of Bantu today is Swahili. They also started using iron tools and weapons and that spread to the rest of Africa. People in Africa are still using traditions from the Bantu.

  • The term "Bantu" means people.
  • Around the 1920s, whites in South Africa started to use the term “Bantu.”
  • Today, among the Bantu language groups, the most widely spoken language is Swahili
  • The Bantu people originally lived in West Africa.
  • They first lived around the Nile River.
  • Some Bantu speaking groups are the Baganda, Banyoro, and Batoro in Uganda
  • The Bantu expansion was a long series of migrations across Africa.
  • About 3,000 years ago, people who spoke Bantu started migrating to the south and east.
  • The first group of migration was around the Congo river.
  • The other group went into southern Africa.
  • The Bantu migrated because they needed to find better places for agriculture.
  • People think the Bantu people moved in four groups.
  • The four groups are: Interlacustrine Bantu, Central Bantu, Highland Bantu and Southern Tanzania Bantu.
  • There are almost a hundred Bantu languages.
  • Evidence shows that the root Bantu language emerged in what is now Nigeria and Cameroon by 2000 bc.
