Hypothesis

What was the significance of the experiment?

Asch's hypothesis was that most people would not conform to the obviously incorrect answers.

-Demonstrated the extent to which we as individuals can be influenced by strangers when in a minority party

-Gave us facts and statistic that could be useful to many areas of sociology

-Shows us that political leaders and other people in a position of power might make unethical decisions by conforming with the ideas of others.

Solomon Asch

What was the question or topic of study?

Asch's Conformity Study

Data collection

123 males participated and were put into groups with 5 to 7 "confederates"

"Confederates"-

people who were aware of the experiment but were introduced as regular participants

Solomon Asch conducted a number of studies on individuals in the 1950's to determine how easily their opinions could be influenced by a group of planted actors.

What was the method of data collection?

Asch's experiment used different visual test to quiz the groups of 5 to 7

One of the visual tests used during Asch's experiments

Participants were to decide which line (A,B,or C) was the same length as the line on the left.

The outcome

Data collection

Asch's experiment showed that participants would give wrong answers 32 percent of the time. Approximately 75% of the people conformed at least once and only 25% did not conform at all.

Asch's initial hypothesis was only partially correct because most of the time they did receive the correct answers, but the majority of participants did give in to group pressure eventually.

Over 18 trials, confederates were instructed to give 6 correct answers followed by 12 incorrect answers that all line up with one another. the one true participant would then give their answer.
