Peach Street

I used visualizing a lot while reading. The setting to what the characters are wearing. I transfer the words I read into pictures because it helps me see the big picture of the shooting incident.

Visualizing

Tariq Johnson was shot

twice and killed.

Tariq was black, and his shooter, Jack Franklin, was white.

This book requires a lot of rereading. There's a lot of trying to figure out what a character means so I had to go back to the previous chapters to read. It's almost like trying to solve the mystery of how Tariq got shot.

The incident sparks national controversy and stirs the entire town. The book switches perspectives and shows the reactions and emotions of the people affected by Tariq's death; family, friends, bystanders, and even members of the gang he maybe involved with.

Strategies

A prediction I made was based on the summary on the back of the book which is that Tariq was shot because he was black. I was wrong as I discovered while reading that Tariq was shot for an unknown reason (so many perspectives that each character says a different reason). In the book, no one really talked about racism so I believe that Jack didn't shot Tariq because he's black.

Michael Brown was shot by a white police officer after coming out of a convenience store.

Tariq was shot by a white man after coming out of a convenience store.

The shooting of Tariq reminds me of the shooting incident involving Michael Brown. I recently read an article about it and the incident is coincidentally exactly like the book (except there are a few small differences).

The town was in an uproar when they discovered that the victim was unarmed and shot in both the real world and in the book.

Brown apparently (no hard evidence) held up his hands to surrender but still got shot.

Tariq held up his hands to surrender but got shot.

This is one of the reasons why there was a protest.

One of the themes of the book is

PEER PRESSURE.

Tyrell was extremely pressure by his own self and a few powerful people from the gang to take revenge for Tariq. He held a knife even though he knew that he would never hold one. He told himself that Tariq might be proud of him, for being a man and not depending on others anymore.

There was a lot of peer pressure, whether it's being forced to join a gang or taking revenge. Tyrell, Tariq's best friend, experienced a lot throughout the whole book. He was unsure if Tariq would be proud of him if he joined the gang. Or whether people would stop bullying him if the gang was right behind him.

The book is written as a multiple perspectives. I really love this format because readers can get closer, to know the character more better. It's also so cool how there were multiple witnesses so each person explains the situation with a totally unexpected and unique story.

The language was inappropriate. But I think it matches the book very well. I think that the swearing matches the fact that it's a black community and that there are a lot of gangs.
