-Compared to the previous era, this era colonized areas across the sea

-Both eras still used trade to prosper and gain wealth

- Wanted to expand into the Spice Trade between Asia and Europe

-Most successful shipping nation in Europe

-Ruled more by merchants than an aristocracy

Shipbuilding

-Built ships plank-first

-This allowed them to build whatever

shape they thought would serve best, whereas frame-first builders would be constrained by the type of shapes they could make.

Dutch East and West India Companies

-The Dutch East India Company was one of the most successful and beneficial enterprises in history

-It also benefited from spice trade, plantations, and oil reserves

-The Dutch West India Company est. many colonies/trade posts in the 1620s and 1630s

-Largest success for them was the seizure of a Spanish silver fleet

History

-After gaining their independence from Spain, the Dutch prospered

-Amsterdam became a cultural center, as well as a center of international trade

-In 1614, the Dutch est. New Netherland on the East coast of North America

-Controlled areas of modern northern Brazil and the north coast of South America

Decline and Fall

-Series of wars between Britain and France

-Internal disagreements weakened the Republic

-In 1795 the Revolutionary French Army invaded, ending the Dutch Republic
