Skills

What I Would Do Differently

Given the opportunity to do this internship again, I would ask my supervisor to hold another social media meeting. Once the during the semester, a meeting is held with all Rutgers social media unit (RU Athletics, admissions, alumni network, etc.) representatives in attendance, where content and strategies are discussed. There, myself and another intern made suggestions on how to better utilize social media. I believe a second, or even third, meeting like this will be beneficial for all parties involved.

  • Time management
  • Communication
  • Socialization
  • Goal setting
  • Media Literacy
  • Photoshop
  • Photography
  • Interviewing
  • Search engine optimization
  • Editing, design
  • Content creation and curation
  • Meeting deadlines

Greatest Challenge,

Proudest Accomplishment

As I noted in my expectations, I envisioned that, for the most part, I would be sitting at a desk all day. Discovering that much of the internship required interactions with strangers, I became anxious. I have never approached students, faculty, and staff for interviews before, let alone have the courage to talk to someone on campus.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed these random interactions. Interviewing for Humans of Rutgers allowed me to sharpen my skills as a journalist and become a better social being. By breaking the ice and asking people personal questions (What's your biggest regret? What do people not know about you?), I learned a great deal about others, myself, and the skills needed to be successful in the field that I want to pursue. My greatest accomplishment, therefore, has been stepping out of my comfort zone and excelling in a skill that I thought I lacked.

Overview

What I Learned

  • The practical application of media ethics and literacy
  • How to act as a representative of a larger entity
  • How to utilize social media to (1) disseminate information and (2) create social ties
  • Create and publish content that appeals to mass audiences
  • Insight into my own interests

Goals

Short Term

Secure another internship for next semester in social media, editorial, or writing, and use what I learned in my current internship to improve my work and create a network of contacts.

Long Term

In the the foreseeable future, I hope to get a job in the magazine or publishing industry, in the fields listed above. Eventually I plan on pursuing a master's degree, in a subject that is to be determined after spending a year or two in the professional world.

Plan of Action

Currently, I am furiously applying to internships for next semester, and having my resume reviewed and critiqued by my Editing and Design professor in order present myself in the best way possible.

Simultaneously, I am researching job positions for the summer, and keeping an open mind about my long term goals. I've recently spoke with someone about teaching English abroad, which is something that all the interviews I performed in my current internship has made me realize my skill as a speaker and leader.

Typical Day

Everyday, the first thing and last thing I would do was monitor Rutgers various social media websites (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram). That entailed retweeting relevant content, creating statuses/tweets, generating followers, responding to messages, and removing inappropriate content.

After, I would leave the office to: take pictures for the Rutgers Instagram account, conduct interviews for Humans of Rutgers and RU Speaks, or do other projects. Some include the Rutgers Fall Photo Challenge and "What RU Thankful For."

"Rutgers Today is an online news center that provides a daily stream of news and events taking place on Rutgers’ three campuses to audiences both inside and outside of the university. The website showcases the best that Rutgers has to offer – groundbreaking research, public service, scholarship, exhibitions, performances, and stories about outstanding Rutgers students, faculty, and staff.

Videos and photo galleries exist side-by-side with breaking news and features of general interest. The website also provides links to external media coverage about Rutgers, the state of New Jersey, and the broader arena of higher education."

My Role

— Social Media Intern —

Why Media Relations?

I've always had an interest in social media's role in social relations, and how powerful than role can be. As a social media intern at a large university, I was able to observe the importance and scope of such technology. Not only does it have the ability to inform, but also bring people closer together—as I've noticed when conducting interviews and receiving feedback for Humans of RU.

Relevant Classes

Editing & Design (Fall 2014)

This course, along with News Reporting and Writing and Writing for Print Media provided an advance instruction in AP Style, and how to publish media.

Gender, Race and Class in the Media (Fall 2013)

This course taught me the basics of journalistic integrity, how to be media literate. Additionally, it provided instruction in how pervasive the media can be and its effects on society.

Expectations

I didn't expect much going into this internship. As someone who grew up using social media, I envisioned that much of my time will be spent at a computer, virtually interacting with other people.

Reality

The internship required a lot of "field work." I spent most of my time out of the office, doing projects on campus and creating content for Rutgers social media accounts. The internship was much more rewarding than expected.
