Christian Ethics and Genetic Engineering

Applying Christian Ethics:

When talking about genetic engineering and embryo research, the sanctity of life is key. The Bible teaches us that God created humans in His image, and so human life has intrinsic value. Therefore using an embryo for the sake of another human is wrong as the embryo has intrinsic worth. However, there are not the same objections when it comes to adult stem cells or the modification of animals or plants.

Natural Law forms the basis of Catholic ethics and so they are postive about advances in science that improve human life, but never at the expense of human life, which is sacred from the moment of conception in the eyes of the Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church however, recognises the need for humans to put to use their God given intelligence to transform and progress the world.

What is Genetic Engineering?

Issues Raised with Genetic Engineering:

Google definition: The deliberate modification of the characteristics of an organism by manipulating its genetic material.

Textbook Definition: The technology involved in cloning, gene therapy and gene manipulation.

After it was discovered in the mid 1970s, genetic engineering caused much debate and controversy. Whilst some argue that it is just an extension of what breeders of plants and animals have been doing for hundreds of yearsand what nature did through the process of evolution and natural selection. However, others claimed that it was 'playing God' and was unnatural.
