Jambu grows naturally from southern India to eastern Malaya. Jambu is a small tree or large shrub which grows on the average of 10 to 20 feet in height. Branches grow close to the ground from a short, crooked trunk. The crown is open and non-symmetrical. It likes plenty of rain evenly spaced throughout the year. The jambu fruit has a shiny, thin skin which varies from white to light red.

The Bengal Bamboo can be found in the biome of the Southeast Asian rainforest. It often grows as an undergrowth scattered or in patches in the forest. It does very well in a moist environment with a lot of rainfall. It likes temperatures between 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The vegetation in rainforests grows in layers. Some of the layers get sunlight, but the bottom layers get little or no sunlight. Bambusa tulda is important to its environment. It can reduce soil erosion. It sucks up water from heavy rains that might cause flooding. It also provides shelter for many animals.

Flora

Bengal Tiger

The trees and other plants of the region are tropical; in some countries where the mountains are tall enough, temperate-climate vegetation can be found. These rainforest areas are currently being logged-over, especially in Borneo. Southeast Asia is home thousands of species of plants, many of which are endemic (meaning they occur in one region, and no where else).

Climate Continued

  • Lives in the Sundarban regions of India,Bangladesh, China, Siberia, and Indonesia.
  • Needs to live in areas with dense vegitation, access to water, and large ungulate (hoofed) prey.
  • It's fur is very fine in texture.
  • Their weight can be up to 575 pounds and can get up to 10 feet long from head to tail and 3 feet tall to the top of its shoulders.

Strangler Figs

Geography

Figs are one of the most important plant species of a rainforest ecosystem. Hundreds of animals like parrots, monkeys, gibbons, and fruit-eating bats, feed on the sweet fruit of the fig tree. Figs bear fruit several times a year. Strangler figs are tall canopy trees which can grow to 148 feet in height. The forest floor of a rainforest is a difficult place for seedlings to grow. There is little light and a lot of competition for water and nutrients. Strangler figs have made an adaptation to avoid these difficulties. Unlike most plants, strangler figs start out their lives as epiphytes in the crook of a tree or on its branches. Tiny, sticky seeds are deposited high in a tree by animal droppings.

  • The rainforests in Southeast Asia are thought to be the most bio-diverse regions in the world
  • They found as many as 200 tree species in one single hectare
  • These rainforests receive almost constant rain that adds up to ranging from 60-100inches annually
  • There is very little temperature variation throughout the 4 different seasons of the year

Jambu

  • Southeast Asia consists of a 3,100 mile chain of over 20,000 islands strung between Asia and Australia
  • It is located south of China and East of India
  • The 2 major surrounding seas around it are the South China Sea and the Philippine Sea
  • In the Pacific and Indian Ocean
  • Southeast is very rich in a diverse population of animals and plants
  • It is a very wet and tropical climate throughout these region
  • This weather is very useful for the farming for the 593,415,000 people that live in this region which rely on the humidity and dampness for the growing of the main source of their diet, (rice)

Bengal Bamboo

Climate

  • The climate of Southeast Asia is very vulnerable to climate change which demonstrates a wide range of adaptation measures always being applied
  • Winds called monsoons (constant winds of about 10-30 knots) control much of the Southeast Asian climate
  • The average temperatures of most regions in Southeast Asia are 96 degrees in the day and 75 degrees at night
  • The oppressive humidity stays at a almost constant 90%

Bengal Tiger Continued

Geography Continued

Wagler's Viper

  • The Bengal tiger's most obvious adaptation

is its striped fur coat because as the sunlight

filters through the canopy, down to the forest

floor, it creates stripes of shadow, much like the

tigers markings.

  • These tigers have extremely good hearing

and are even able to pick up infrasound, which makes it easier to hear and communicate over a large distance in the forests because infrasound can pass through trees and other objects.

  • Lives in the trees of the rainforest
  • Likes a wet and warm climate with about

90% humidity

  • It is a medium sized viper that only grows up to about 4 feet long.
  • This viper is a nocturnal hunter which gets enough energy it needs for a month in only 3 meals
  • Has 2 hollow fangs that carry venom in which attacks the red blood cells and the sources of its prey's oxygen.
  • This region consists of about 1,900,000 square miles
  • Southeast Asia is a very elevated region with peaks exceeding 9,000 feet
  • Northern and western highlands seperate the China and India regions
  • These mountain ranges help form part of the ring of fire
  • Being so elevated makes this part of the world familiar with a few volcanoes, especially in Indonesia and the Philippine Islands which can cause a series of earthquakes, typhoons, and hurricanes

Sumatran Rhinoceros

Wagler's Viper Continued

  • An adult male is green with a black border and many greenish yellow cross bars on its back
  • Young vipers change their color as it grows from all green with spots of red and white and sometimes arranged in pale crossbars
  • Small and hairy rhinoceros which survives in limited numbers in small pockets of Indonesia and Malaysian rainforests
  • The smallest living rhinoceros
  • Grey-brown leathery hide
  • Grows to be about 8-8.5 feet and stands 4.5 feet tall at the shoulders.
  • weighs from 2,200-4,400 pounds
  • Only known Asian rhinoceros with 2 horns

Sumatran Rhinoceros Continued

  • Both sexes have horns, but the male's horns are usually bigger
  • Upper lip curves down and can be moved around to grasp and move objects
  • Lives in the thick growth of heir rainforest habitat and prefer higher elevation areas in the mountain moss forests
  • They only make contact with each other during mating season
  • Has a lifespan of about 35 years
  • Feeding times are just before dawn and right after dusk
  • Eats only plants (herbivore)
  • There is thought to be only 300 of these rhinoceros's left in existence and was put on the endangered species list in 1996
