Negative Effects of Foster Care

Sylvia Marie Likens

Color, symbol, slogan, and metaphor

"Statistics show that children in foster care systems have bleak futures ahead of them," a top official with Arrow Child and Family Ministries said. Arrow, an international child-placement agency, claims the statistics describe a “national foster care crisis.”In 2000, approximately 2.8 million reports of abuse or neglect were reported to child welfare agencies nationwide. Another astonishing fact is that out of every 100 foster children, only two go on to earn their bachelors degree or higher and only 50% of kids earned their high school diploma. Also, about 50% of women who were once in foster care will become pregnant by the age of 19.

#FosterCareCrisis

Sylvia Marie Likens (January 3, 1949 – October 26, 1965) was an American murder victim. She was tortured to death by Gertrude Baniszewski, her children, and other young people from their neighborhood. Sylvia was staying at Gertrudes home for 20$ a week, paid for by her parents who were working with the carnival. When the weeks pay was failed to be sent by her parents, Sylvia was dragged to a room and brutally beaten. She was eventually beaten and tortured to death by her foster mother and foster siblings. She was found dead in a scorching hot bathtub.

Logan Marr

On Jan. 31, 2001, 5-year-old Logan Marr was found dead in the basement of her foster mother's home in Chelsea, Maine. The foster mother, Sally Schofield, a highly respected former caseworker for Maine's Department of Human Services , would later be tried and convicted of manslaughter after police determined that Logan had died from asphyxiation after being bound with duct tape and strapped into a high chair in the basement. No one knew of the abuse since Logan's caseworker, Alison Peters failed to ever check in on the young girl.

Euinice Spry

Eunice Spry is a British woman from Tewkesbury, England who was convicted of 26 charges of child abuse against children in her foster care in April 2007. She was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment in and ordered to pay £80,000 in fines. In sentencing, the judge told Spry that it was the 'worst case in his 40 years practicing law'. The foster mother forced the three children in her care (two foster, one adopted) to eat their own excrement and vomit, rammed sticks down the children’s throats, rubbed their skin with sandpaper and locked them naked in a room for a months. Spry admits that her strong religious beliefs pushed her to perform the terrifying acts of abuse.
