Duality in African Americans

Thesis Statement

Stereotype Threat

The psyche of individual blacks gets damaged...by bad images of the group projected in society–images of blacks as aggressive, as less intelligent, and so on. Repeated exposure to these images causes the images to become “internalized” implicitly accepted as true of the group and, tragically, also perhaps of one’s self. (46)

The struggle for African American identity is a result of an unnecessary battle between white social structures and an allegiance felt to black culture that must be addressed by challenging stereotypes and empowering voices.
