Five steps of the listening process

Hearing

Definition: is the psychological dimension

of listening

  • waves strike the ear at certain frequency

and loudness

  • more then 13 mil. people in the US communicate with some degree of hearing impairment
  • background noise impairs hearing
  • exposed to loud noises will impair hearing

Attending

Definition: Process of filtering out some

messages and focusing on others.

  • we attend to thing we want, need, and

desire and have interest in.

  • you will attend more to a message if

a payoff is the result

  • attending doesn't just help the listener, but

it also helps the sender of the message

Understanding

Definition: occurs when we make

sense of a message

  • it is possible to hear and attend to

a message with out understanding

it at all

  • possible to misunderstand message

Responding

Definition: giving observable

feedback to the speaker

  • good response is having good

eye contact, and posture

  • asking questions back to the

speaker

  • be tuned into the speaker so you

have a good response

Remembering

Definition: ability to recall info

  • if you dont remember

message there is no point

in listening

  • immediately after hearing something

you only recall 50%. after 8 hours it

drops to 30%

  • a small fraction of what we hear we

remember
