The Bread Basket Colonies

The Western part of Connecticut,New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware. They were called the breadbasket because they planted a lot of wheat.

They were known for their use of cash crops, which are crops produced for sale, rather than for use by the grower. These crops were wheat, barley, oats, rye, and corn. Since they had rich soil, and many rivers, they grew an abundance of these crops.

They shipped these cash crops by boat to the ports of New York and Philadelphia. This was important because the colonies made most of their income by selling the crops, and without these ports, they would make less money.

Conestoga wagons also helped transport these grains and other things. It was big enough to carry loads up to 8 tons and was drawn by horses, mules or oxen. It was designed to resemble a boat, to help it cross rivers and streams, but it sometimes leaked.
