Reason and Key Elements

  • Reason for the bridge: to connect the city of San Francisco across to the Golden Gate Strait
  • Key design elements:
  • Ninth longest bridge in the world, 4200 foot long suspension span.
  • Main cables have grooved cable bands which hold the suspender cables each and each are composed of four separate structural wire ropes

  • Started construction: January 5, 1933
  • Finished: April 19, 1937
  • Announced: May 27, 1937

Challenges Faced

  • City officials were concerned about costs
  • Environmentalists worried the bridge would impact their business
  • Workers had to work with the strong ocean currents, heavy winds, and fog in Golden Gate Strait
  • 11 workers died during the building of the bridge when their scaffolding fell through a safety net.

Bridge Type

Pros:

  • Span over long distances
  • Inexpensive to build
  • Easy to maintain
  • Versatile

Cons:

  • Load limitations
  • Limited applications

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge which is a bridge that hangs from the cables that are made from steel wires.

The Golden Gate Bridge

By: Rachel Lee

It is used in this location because a suspension could withstand brutal winds, tide, fog, and earthquakes. Stood for 27 years. Sturdy. Long distance for a cheap cost.

Triangles of the Golden Gate Bridge

Where: Bottom of the bridge, right below the road. Congruent in size and shape

Why:

  • Uses geometric principles of rigidity to make sturdy while using little material
  • Not possible to change the angle of vertex without changing the length of side (vice versa)

Location and Structure

  • Design consists on suspension, truss arches, and truss causeways
  • Material used: steel
