Archetypes in

Movie Trailer

Anti-Hero

Bridge

Damsel in Distress

Lord Farquaad having Shrek retrieve Fiona and defeat the dragon

Being short

In a usual "Hero/Damsel in Distress" archetype, the prince is the one that does the task. Though in this instance, an ugly ogre is given the task. In addition to not doing the task, Farquaad is short and stubby, going against the normal archetype where the prince is tall, strong, and valiant.

Shrek and Donkey cross a bridge to get to Fiona's tower. This bridge is wobbly and falling from it would mean death. While they escape with Fiona the bridge is burns down behind them by the lava.

Divine Intervention

  • The scene where Fiona sings a bird to death to make eggs
  • Fiona fighting off the bandits
  • Fiona burping
  • This reveals that this isn't going to be the typical story and I think is meant to allude to the ending

When it snow in To Kill a Mockingbird it is a rare event and the whole community is frazzled. This foreshadows how the community will be consumed with Tom Robinson's case. It will make some people not act like themselves and some to stand for justice.

Fiona is cursed with a curse that turns her into an ogre every night. This allows her to learn that what is in the inside is far greater than what is on the outside.

Shrek

To Kill a Mockingbird

"'The world's endin', Atticus! Please do something-!...No it's not,' he said. 'It's snowing'(86).

"As it has not snowed in Maycomb County since 1885..."(86).

  • Fiona hides herself from Shrek and Donkey
  • Fiona wants to get married before sunset so Lord Farquaad doesn't see her as an ogre

Mask(Helmet)

Color

Green

Loyal Retainer

While Shrek rescues Princess Fiona he wears a helmet to conceal his identity because he realizes that he does not fit the knight and shinning armor appearance she is expecting. She believes that he is her true love since he liberates her.

Miss Understood/Outcast

Dragon vs. Boo Radley

Donkey giving Shrek the "pep talk" after Shrek doubts that he can save Princess Fiona

Though donkey often annoys Shrek, he is gives his friend the words that allows him to go against his doubts. This not only shows their deep friendship, but also how loyal donkey is to Shrek by giving him the confidence he needs to complete the task.

  • In the opening scene
  • The first thing you see is a mucky green creature thing which shows that the main character is not the typical prince charming
  • This kind of green makes me think of boogers and sickness
  • The creator reveals that this isn't going to be the typical story by using the color green

In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird Boo Radley is a character that is not known to the community but rumors are created to define him. These rumors frighten the people and they think that he is a crazy man.

In the movie Shrek, the Dragon is seen as a destructive monster. In fairy tales dragons are perceived as evil creatures that don't have feelings. They are usually the one trying to kill the main character or the hero.

Shrek

To Kill A MockingBird

  • The Dragon cradles Donkey and blushes whenever he compliments her
  • She helps Donkey and Shrek stop Fiona's wedding

"So Jem received most of his information from Miss Stephanie Crawford, a neighborhood scold, who said she knew the whole thing. According to Miss Stephanie, Boo was sitting in the living room..."(13).

"Do you think they're true, all those things they say about B-Mr. Arthur Radley?"(60).

"'.....Atticus, he was real nice...' "Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them"(376).
