Life Cycle of an iPhone

The iPhone

The first iPhone was produced in 2007.

Now, just six years later, it feels like everyone has an iPhone.

Through excellent marketing and advertisement, Apple has made the iPhone a device which accounts for the majority of the company's revenue!

ELEMENT MINING

In addition to glass and plastic, iPhone elements include:

It's worth thinking about....

There are innumerable effects and consequences directly imparted by the production and distribution of these nifty handheld companions.

To better understand our digital device, let's examine its various stages of life:

DISTRIBUTION

Apple is constantly coming out with new models of iPhones. As a result, people are constantly ditching their old phones to get the latest model.

Metals

Environmental Consequences of Rare-Earth Mining

Believe it or no, each iPhone contains metals and precious metals.

The village of Baotou in Inner Mongolia is the largest source of rare-earth minerals.

Rare-Earth Minerals

Human Consequences of Rare-Earth Mining

Apple is based in Cupertino, California. It has to execute the transportation of iPhones all around the world!

In the DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, a violent war has been going on for over 15 years. This was is no longer just about ethnicity, land or politics: armed groups now fight for control over mineral resources which will provide their side with financial support.

Nearby farmers are now unable to grow anything due to the high levels of toxic chemical substances and radioactive sludge.

Lanthanum

Workers are paid well, but are also in constant danger.

Dysprosium

China has begun to limit its rare-earth mineral exportations due to severe environmental damage and pollution.

Gold

Neodymium

Tantalum

Tin

Coltan

Extraction involves boiling acid and other chemicals.

MANUFACTURING

Cerium

Tungsten

Copper

These guys are called "rare-earth minerals" and currently 90% of them are mined in CHINA.

Praseodymium

Some of these conflict minerals may be found in your iPhone!

Workers may have difficulty breathing orbe burned by these chemicals.

Gadolinium

Ytrrium

Europium

Perhaps the rare-earth mineral lanthanum that this worker is extracting will end up in an iPhone...

Terbium

iphones are made where???

Instead of just throwing away the iPhone, it is better to:

MOST LIKELY..........NOT AMERICA.

Apple first had to transport the components from suppliers to the assembly plants in China.

TRADE-IN

RECYCLE

or

Trade-Ins

The finished products are then shipped to distribution centers around the world.

There are many "recommerce" sites looking to re-sell your unwanted phone, like Gazelle, ReCellular, NextWorth, Amazon Trade-In

Phones are first assessed to see if they work.

iPhones in perfectly fine condition are sold on eBay or Amazon.

New but broken phones are sold to wholesalers that recondition and resell the phone as warrantly replacements.

Recycling

Distribution Centers

Apple encourages recycling!!

According to the Apple website, phones that cannot be resold can qualify for recycling.

These centers are all over the place!

Japan

Probably China.

The phone will be dismantled so that the plastic, metal, and glass can be reused, reducing the need to mine new raw minerals.

U.K.

Australia

U.S.

China

Apple claims to meet the requirements of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal.

Czech Republic

Singapore

RESULTS OF HARSH LABOR CONDITIONS

These devices are under surveillance by security personnel every step of the way, from truck depots to airports to customs and storage warehouses until the iPhone is finally revealed.

Working Conditions

Imagine THIS!

Standing for 12-hour shifts with only two 30-min breaks six days a week

Foxconn now has the unfortunate reputation of employee suicides. Many bright, capable young people, mostly women, some fresh out of college, seek jobs in the city and end up at these brutal factories where they lose all sense of hope for a bright future.

iPhone Manufacturing

Working without protective equipment while exposed to chemicals, loud noise, lasers for 69 hrs per week

Companies include:

Excessive working hours

JABIL CIRCUIT - Florida-based American company with factories worldwide

Insufficient wages

Insufficient worker training

"The people outside want a job, and the people inside want to quit."

Abuse by management

PEGATRON - Taiwanese Company

Insufficient grievance channels

FOXCONN - Taiwanese Company, but many plants located in China

Health and safety concerns

Shanghai

Shenzhen

Yantai

Taiyuan

Zhengzhou

Suzhou

Wuxi

Heard of these places?

Maybe your iPhone was made there.
