What Does Health Mean to Me?

Health is combining and applying a balance of mentally and physically healthy choices to your life for optimum wellness.

not the Food Pyramid but...

the Pyramid of Health!

Unhealthy Habits

In our country the scale is uneven! Balance it with applying both physical AND mental health into your life.

Physical Health is determined by how your physical body reacts in relation to aliments and if your body is functioning the way it was made to function.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health is determined by your ability to deal with difficulties, manage emotions, the quality of your relationships and how you feel about yourself. It isn't just the absence of mental illness!

Healthy Habits

Taking care of your health physically and mentally is what will maintain health now and in the future.

Habits Around The World

Not every country has the same health habits as the United States, it is important to explore the values of other countries as well as your own to look at things in a new way and create your own definition of what is healthy, not society's.

Example: The USA is now passing laws that say recreational marijuana is available in some states. This is directly effecting my life because of the number of people I know that have used marijuana in the past, and also I get to witness if, and how, the legalization of marijuana will raise revenue and cut down on crime in an environment so close to home.

United States: Attitude towards Health

  • "The Misuse of Drug Act of 1975" is the law of the land for drug related crime and punishment. This document classifies drugs into "A'", "B", and "C" classes much like the United states.
  • A= Very high risk of harm and illegal: Common: Cocaine, Meth, Heroine, LSD
  • B= Very high risk of harm and on prescription: Common: Marijuana, MDMA, morphine. MDMA is not a prescription drug in the United States.
  • C= Moderate risk of harm but not illegal: Common: Cannabis
  • A new law was put into effect stating that no one under the age of 18 may obtain synthetic cannabis products. Penalty: up to 8 years in prison. Over the age of 18 these products are legal and controlled. In the USA these products are illegal.
  • NZ wants to focus on increased access to heart and diabetes checks, better help for smokers who wish to quit, increased immunization, shorter hospital stays, shorter waits for cancer treatment, and improved access to surgery.
  • The Accident Compensation Corporation covers the costs of treatment for 'accidents', for all people legally in NZ (including tourists)
  • system of public hospitals treats citizens or residents free of charge and is managed by District Health Boards. However, costly or difficult operations often require long waiting list delays unless the treatment is medically urgent

My Wellness Plan

My Wellness plan is a series of steps to help me towards a healthy mind, body, and soul. These goals are achievable because they are a mix of quantitative and general subjects. For this reason, I will stay on track but also reward myself for reaching each goal.

Started from the Bottom Now We're Here!

Conclusion

In order to define what wellness and health mean to me, I first defined what health was NOT. Then, I defined what health was to me. I also explained how many of the aspects related to my life because of my age and social surroundings. I then elaborated on the importance of teenagers like myself comparing and contrasting the united states and its view on health with that of other countries around the world. I ended with wrapping up my understandings into my personal wellness plan for next year and how in little steps anyone can reach their goals. Health is not just physical like the common belief, it is mental as well. If my mind and physical body are taken care of, I am on the way to a healthier me.

Physically

Mentally

Step 1 : GET ENOUGH REST! with school and friends and family, it never seems like I will get enough sleep. I will aim for at least 8 hours every night, not 6 or 7 like usual.

Step 2: Healthy eating. Even though i eat salads practically five days a week, that is no excuse to binge on foods that are unhealthy for the rest of he day. Moderation! 1-2 yummy desserts per week is plenty.

Step 3: Exercise! Once again, time comes into play. I have to remember that exercise wont tire me out after a long day, it will give me energy. I plan on going back to doing cardio at least two times per week, so that i can realistically have enough time.

Step 4: Stretching! I want to be able to do a full center split by this time next year. Also, I want to continue with my current flexibility and yoga everyday.

Step 5: Ab strength! I want to get back the stomach definition that I lost over the winter with my strength routine and cardio.

Step 6: Nurse my tendonities in my shins back to health. I want to be able to run again!

Step 1: Work, Play, Play, Work, Play. Spend at least 10 minutes less time worrying each day about my job and responsibilities. Instead, do something fun!

Step 2: Don't let "health" run your life! If I miss a work out, slip up and eat some extra calories, no big deal! My goal is to not feel guilty in these situations and not slip into disordered habits.

Step 3: Spend time with friends: Work on building relationships with current and new friends. I will make the best of my summer!

Step 4: Experience, Learn! I will spend time traveling, reading, or just observing each day. Its amazing how much the world can teach us.

Step 5: Appreciate your self worth. The little things matter. Made your bed? Finished a novel? That's awesome! I want to be proud of myself.

Sample Country: New Zealand

  • In the USA the most common heath topics relate to weight. Tabloids are constantly displaying headlines like, "Lose Weight Fast" -This targets teenagers like me and can be harmful
  • misconception: weight determines health
  • Obama-Care was recently put into effect by President Obama. This health care act requires everyone to have some form of health care and offers programs for pregnant mothers, and does not allow coverage to be denied due to pre-existing conditions as well as other programs. This means because I am a woman I now get the same health care as men!
  • Fad diets that do not always work for weight loss such as vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free are seen often
  • Obama care made mental health in the top ten priorities
  • Stigma toward metal illness is lessening but is still seen frequently.
  • Substances such as cocaine, heroine, and MDMA, are all illegal and can be punished by a simple fine or a prison sentence depending on the circumstance
  • Hospital visits and medical treatment is costly but some expenses are paid for my insurance.

Physical: These are examples of physical ways to take care of your health.

Mental: These are examples of how to practice good mental health

  • Exercise: Exercise is a great way to stay in good physical shape. It prevents heart disease in the future and strengthens your muscles for a better metabolism.
  • Healthy Eating: Not everyone has the same concrete eating plan that is best for them. Adjust your calories, vitamins, grains, proteins, vegetables, dairy, and fruits to your personal needs, not what the government says is right! This applies to my life because starting eating healthy now can help prevent disease in a future, and make you feel good today! Talking to a nutritionist may be a good way to start.
  • Staying away from substances: It is important to stay away from the misuse of legal and illegal substances to prevent addiction, and the physical effects substances can have on your body.
  • Stand up to Stigma: Standing up to mental illness stigma is not only supporting to your peers, but it improves your mental state too! Positive thoughts help encourage all around mental health. This can be done at school, and even over social media which applies to me as well as most teenagers in the United States.
  • Learn your history: Some mental illnesses are transferred genetically. In class, we did an activity that required us to find out all the health problems in our family. By doing so, we can determine if we are at higher risk for certain mental illnesses and how we could practice good mental health to prevent these illnesses.
  • Exercise: Exercise not only good for physical health, it also releases endorphins; chemicals in the brain that regulate mood. If you are upset, a good coping strategy is to go for jog, or play your favorite sport with friends. Your mood will improve.

What is Physical Health?

Mental: These are examples of not taking care of your mental health

Physical: These are examples of not taking care of your physical health

In order to understand what health means to me I will first address what is not healthy

  • Smoking- In the Body Worlds Exhibit, as well as in our substance use unit, we discussed cigarettes, cigars, and marijuana smoking. I was able to see how exactly tar complied in the lungs and how dangerous it could be to your health. This is especially prevalent in my life as an adolescent because of the amount of teenagers in Dover who smoke.
  • Over Eating- In the Body Worlds Exhibit, as well as in our nutrition unit, we explored how meals in the United States are much larger than is needed. Over eating can lead to obesity which is the leading cause of death in the United States.
  • Unprotected Sex- We did an experiment to see just how far and wide a sexually transmitted infection can travel between partners. It is important especially while going through puberty and exploring your sexuality to be safe and use condoms to prevent nasty sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia, or Syphilis.
  • Addiction: During the substance abuse unit we learned about how addiction is not something you can control and is extremely difficult to deal with because it stems from the chemicals in your brain. However, if you do not use illegal drugs and use legal ones in moderation and as prescribed, it is easier to prevent the horrors of addiction and quitting, especially during teenage years when the brain is not fully developed.
  • Stress: During the mental health unit, we learned that mental health consisted of good attitude, healthy thoughts, and and rational choices. When someone is over stressed, the brain can not function optimally and make the proper brain connections for mental health.
  • Not saying how you feel: It is important to think for yourself to develop your brain, especially as a teenager. It is just as important to express thoughts feelings and emotions to others for your mental health because it creates healthy relationships and does not leave you feeling like you aren't being listened to or considered.
  • Not practicing Moderation: It is important to eat balanced meals of grains, dairy, protein, vegetables, and fruits. However, it is also important to "TREAT YO SELF!" It is okay to have a cookie every once in awhile without guilt and displays a healthy relationship with food that will prevent future eating disorders.
