Habitat and predators

Habitat : Blowflies tend to hang where they have food which is around a rotting carcass, around animal feces, or near human habitats.

Predators : Beatles and spiders

First instar

Adult fly

  • Moves around in maggot mass
  • 5 mm in size
  • Has 2 spiracles
  • Uses mouth hooks to scape decaying flesh from body
  • First moult to second moult takes 1 day
  • Mates on emergence from pupa
  • Feeds on protein from body fluids
  • Lays eggs on corpse
  • Emergence to egg laying takes 2 days
  • Feeds on fluid exuded from the body
  • Migrates into the body
  • 2 mm in size
  • Has one spiracle
  • Hatching to first moult takes 1 day

Pre-Pupa & Pupa

Pre-pupa :

Eggs

  • Migrates away from the corpse seeking a pupation site (usually in soil)
  • Does not eat
  • transforms into pupa in four days
  • 15 mm - 20 mm in size
  • The female flies lay their eggs on the body in clumps of up to 300
  • The process of laying the eggs and them hatching takes 1 day

Pupa :

  • resides within puparium
  • does not feed
  • transforms from larvae to adult fly
  • for pupa to emerge takes 10 days
