Facts

-Only sold houses to white buyers, not African Americans even after housing segregation had been ruled unconstitutional by the courts. By 1953, the 70,000 people who lived in Levittown constituted the largest community in the United States with no black residents

- Starting in the early nineteenth century, the advent of new forms of transportation made commuting to urban centers more convenient

-First suburban boom was occurring with nearly 900,000 new homes a year springing up in new communities outside city lines

- Levitts designed suburbia’s to create an un-urban grid like feel, and directed cars going through the development to the outside of the community so Levittown would not be disturbed by noisy traffic

-Underwriting of mortgages for suburban one-family homes, had an enormous influence on the pace of suburbanization in that country by moving the middle-class population out of the inner cities and into the suburbs

Impact on Cities

-Once people moved into the Levitt homes and established communities populated with blue/white collar workers, the city was dimming down on their population.

-Most lower class people were left to the cities because they could not afford the Levitt way of living.

Cars

There were political and economic pressures to expand the road network. In 1958 the Interstate Highway Act connected all the major cities in the US with highways. Each year a new car was developed and presented as automobiles became more widespread. Individuals became more comofortable living in the suburbs since they had a steady was of transportation. Suburbia created a whole new way of living.

"Now"

In 194o, The Public Housing Authority purchased the land/community now known as Fulmor Heights. Three hundred residents who were civilian defense workers purchased the community from the government. To this day, the community is still membership owned and is self-managed by a Board of Directors chosen by the membership. The housing has since then been renovated but the concept is still the same.

Impact on Life Today

  • The biggest impact of this topic would be the development of automobiles. Americans living in the suburbs went beyond reach of public transportation so they depended more on cars. With the advancement of cars this allowed infrastructure of highways and better roads to be built across America.
  • Fulmor Heights on Warminster road relates to Levitt's development of homes for individuals in World War II and their families. This allowed housing of large numbers of people and gave a sense of community.
