Challenges

One main challenge is instruction in a cross cultural situation. When teachers assume that a certain behavior is a students personality, they often are wrong in their assumption. Often, it is a reflection of the students cultural background. Teachers will also over-generalize a students culture and just assume that they act a certain way because of their culture.

In order to overcome this challenge, teachers must learn how to balance and become culturally aware of their students needs and the expectations from the parents. Teachers must do research and have conferences to ensure he/she is providing the best education for each student no matter what their cultural background.

Teachers must teach students that we are not all the same and we do not all come from the same place. Teachers need to also explain that not all students learn the same in order to create a positive learning atmosphere in the classroom.

In order to meet the needs of all students in your classroom, the "inclusive" curriculum is the best approach. This will help students from minority race or backgrounds to develop a sense of identity as individuals as well as identify proudly with their cultural group. This also will teach all students how to synthesize cultural differences into a knowledge based approach in facilitating students' personal and professional success.

Teachers have many responsibilities when teaching cross cultural awareness in the classroom. Teacher's must teach and demonstrate:

* Respect for all students

*Tollerance

*Collaboration

*Equity

*understanding

According to the Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing (n.d.), cross cultural awareness is "an essential skill in the provision of culturally appropriate service. Cultural awareness is the understanding that we are all shaped by our cultural background, and that affects how we perceive the world and people differently everyday. Cross cultural awareness allows people to recognize cultural issues with other individuals and be more sensitive to their needs.
