Onchocerca cervicalis

Neck threadworms have an indirect life cycle

live under the horse's skin

are picked up by the biting midge when it feeds on the horse

Microfilariae develop into infective larvae in the midge's mouth and are passed when the midge bites a horse.

Adult Onchocerca cervicalis are not affected by deworming agents and recurrent infections result. Ivermectin (anti parasite medication) should be repeated at 4 month intervals to keep the skin free of disease.

-Neck Threadworms are also known as Onchocerca

-Microfilariae is the name given to the larvae stage.

-Description- They are long and coiled in shape with the males being around 7cm in length and females being around 30cm in length.

Life cycle

prevention & control

Symptoms

Threadworms depend on another organism

•The neck microfilariae lives under the horse's skin and wait to picked up by a biting midge.

•develop to the infective larvae stage ( 3 weeks)

•when the midge bites another horse the neck threadworms are able to enter the horses system v

Threadworms travel to ligaments in the horses neck , & tendons and underbelly of the horses body.

◾Small lumps on the chest, withers, neck, face, and belly

◾Itching and rubbing, resulting in loss of hair and scaly skin

◾Development of scabby, weeping sores

◾Depigmentation of skin and hair upon regrowth

The best prevention is control of biting insects and protecting the horse through good stable and pasture management. Insect screens in stables during summer months will help minimize bites, as will the use of horse blankets or coverings.

Since biting insects are most active at dusk, night, and dawn, stabling horses during these time periods is helpful. Removal of insect breeding areas, such as stagnant water, is important. In some cases, a veterinarian may prescribe Poridon, a pour-on insecticide that is effective against biting insects, including gnats.
