Social Media Vs. Traditional Media: How do they differ?

How can they work together?

Traditional Journalism Teaches Objectivity

The Rule of Law:

  • Traditional journalists are responsible for following all local and state laws
  • They avoid contempt of court, don't break court injunctions and avoid revealing the names of young victims or juveniles accused of crimes.
  • Social media users, knowingly or not, break many of these

Social Media Vs. Traditional Journalism: How do they differ?

here is an example of traditional news with a mess up as well

  • The job of a journalist is to observe and report the news to its audience
  • Citizen reporters do not face the same consequences.
  • Hard to verify them as a reliable source considering their personal or political motive for reporting their story

Anonymity:

  • With no name and no face these social media reporters have seemingly no personal responsibility for their findings.
  • Traditional journalists, however, are held accountable for their views and values.

"Some of our role is probably gone. Will we be "First with the breaking news?" Probably not in many cases. Someone on Twitter will be. Will we have the first still of a hero or victim? Facebook probably will have it. Will we get the first video out of Syria or Burma? YouTube will almost certainly have it posted first, although we will often be one of the first to verify if it is genuine (or not)." -BBC News

  • There will always be a demand for quality reporting

Social Media Vs. Traditional Journalism

Social Media Vs. Traditional Media: How do they differ?

  • Rapid changes in technology are changing the medium for traditionl journalism.
  • "60% of people use Facebook as a recurring news source"
  • News is now available 24 hours a day on all new platforms
  • There is an overwhelming rise in "citizen journalists"
  • This could bring issues with regards to accountability.

Types of Social Media

Ethics:

  • Journalists operate with an ethical framework and establish facts before publishing them as they have a reputation to uphold and must follow company policies.
  • Social Media users have the power to set their own boundaries
  • Example: An example of a social media reporting gone wrong took place recently on the site: Reddit
  • Social Networks: Examples: (Facebook, Myspace and Linkedin)
  • Social News: Examples:(Digg and Reddit)
  • Media: Examples: YouTube and Flickr
  • Mirco Blogging: Examples: Twitter

Social Media Progression

Types of Traditional Journalism

Example

  • Print Journalism: Examples: (Newspapers, magazines, newsletters, banners, posters, billboards, books, brochures and flyers.)
  • Photojournalism: Examples: (Pre-planned news photography, spot news photographers, featured journalism, sports photojournalism and environmental journalism.)
  • Broadcast Journalism: Examples: (Television and radio)
  • We live in the age of digital information
  • Social Media has drastically changed the way news is gathered and received
  • We no longer have to wait 24 hours to get "aged news"
  • Nearly half of Americans get some form of local news on a mobile device and 46% get their news online at least three times a week.
  • Social media is now one of the top three news sources, trailing behind only television.

The Issue of Anonymity

An example of a social media reporting gone wrong is recently on the cite Reddit

  • One incident in which Britains Daily Mail called "one of the biggest acts of civil disobedience in modern times" is the case of Ryan Giggs, a soccer player alleged to have an affair with a reality tv star.
  • Twitter users could be in contempt of court
  • Anonymity on the Internet makes it too easy to deliberately or unintentionally spread outright false information
