Right of Way Experience

My Experience at VDOT

Pictures

My experience at VDOT was amazing. I learned a lot of new things.

  • First I learned how to be better organized, going to school and work was a lot so I had to learn how to manage
  • Second I learned how to use Excel and Access. If you learn how to use them two, you're a computer genius.
  • Third is copying and scanning, when I worked in HR I learned how to use a xerox machine. I made about 150 copies for the New Employee Packets.

The people here at VDOT worked and helped me with everything that I didn't know. Even though I caught on quick i still had questions

Working in the Learning Center was never a dull moment.

- Stacie McCloud

Make the most out of every opportunity, large or small, and have fun while doing so.

-Shade Akindele

  • Next year should be greater than last year, make it the best & take advantage of the great opportunities provided
  • There are going to be a lot of challenges, NEVER give up on something you already started
  • Begin the program as soon as school is over to allow more time for work & networking

Suggestions for Next Year's Youth

Always ask for help, never sit there confused, a question is never a dumb question, and remember they're there to help

- Simone Gordon

  • Roadway Inventory
  • Equipment

Equipment

-Terrans A. Edmonds

It might seem easy, but communicating effectively actually takes quite a bit of finesse. Choosing the right words, listening with our minds instead of just our ears, and getting our message across are skills that will make your life better in the workplace

  • I coordinated with the districts review & preparation of modifications forms
  • I was able to network with other interns as well as employees throughout VDOT
  • Overall, my experience was fabulous, I was able to gain a better understanding of how to write & communicate in an office enviroment from interacting with other employees and divisions

Personal Experiences

Federal Programs Management

Suggestions

Always ask for more work

-Jaylaan Bell-Colley

  • Develop Annual Federal Strategy to ensure all federal funds are obligated within required timeframes, and no funds lapse.
  • Maximize the use of federal funds by processing federal transactions to include authorizations/agreements, modifications, final vouchers, and project closeout transactions.
  • Manage quarterly FIRE/Inactive Report working with districts and divisions to minimize the percentage of unexpended funds
