Virginia's Resolution to the Stamp Act (1765)

Agreed Resolutions

1. The first settlers in the British colonies

brought their livelihood and the privileges of all other citizens of Great Britain.

2.According to two royal charters granted by King James the first, colonists are entitled to the same rights and privileges as natural born citizens of England.

3.The appointed leaders of the colonies should be the ones that are able to impose taxes, they know the colony and colonist best and know what they are able to pay.

4. In the article of taxes and internal police states that the people of the colonies have the right to be governed by their own Assembly

The Split...

Resolution

  • The Stamp Act Signifies the first actual split between the colonies and Great Britain.
  • This was also the first time Parliament tried to raise money through imposed taxes rather then through trade.

WHY DID THIS SPLIT OCCUR?????

They imposed the act without colonial consent, directly dismissing local leaders and challenging their authority.

The House of Burgesses of Virginia settled, between themselves, on ways to resolve the Stamp Act.

Local leaders of the Colonies were determined to show Great Britain that they were in control of there taxation on Virginia's colonist.

Denied Resolutions

1. The General Assembly of Virginia has the only right to impose taxes and impost to the colonist of Virginia and anyone else who tries is considered breaking the constitution, and questioning Great Britain.

2. Colonist do not have to pay any taxes that are imposed on them, other then the ones of the General Assembly.

3.Any person who questions the legality of this is an enemy of the colony

Whats the Stamp Act

Questions to Ponder

Why did the Virginia house Burgesses adopt the first four resolutions and not the fine three?

"The Burgesses rejected as too much radical the last three resolutions..."

What would be the difference between resting the resolutions arguments on "British Freedom" and appealing to more universal concept to liberty?

  • A law passed in 1765 that imposed a tax on all British colonies and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used.

WHY??

Because of all the money that was lost during the Seven Year War, this was Great Britian's way of raising money.
