When Claire was arguing with her father in the car about why she had to go to detention, her father replied by saying... "I'll make it up to you...Honey, ditching class to go shopping doesn't make you defective. Have a good day."

Here, Claire's father is demonstrating high control with high warmth. He is making Claire obey the rules (high control), but also explaining the reason why she has to be punished. His extreme warmth is shown by saying he will do something to make it up to her.

Concept #3

Authoritative Parents

Combine high control with high warmth. They exert control not only by setting rules and enforcing them but also by explaining the reasons and, especially with older children, inviting discussion.

Concept #2

Reaction Formation

Forming an emotional reaction or attitude that is the opposite of one's threatening or unacceptable actual thoughts.

Claire states, "I hate having to go along with everything my friends say!"

This quote shows that Claire unconsciously disagrees with her friends actions, but outwardly voices her agreement in whatever they say/do.

Breakfast Club: The Princess

Concept #4

Id

By: Emily Cohen

A reservoir of unconscious psychic energy that, according to Freud, strives to satisfy basic sexual and aggressive drives.

*Pleasure principle-Immediate gratification

Concept #1

Imaginary Audience

Teens develop an imaginary audience, in which they believe they are living life on a stage with everyone looking and noticing everything they do.

When Brian asked everyone if on the following Monday they would acknowledge each other in the hallway, Claire said no. She thinks that her friends will think differently of her. She believes that every day, there is an imaginary audience constantly watching and criticizing every move she makes.

Claire says to Brian, "You're not friends with the same kind of people that Brian and I are friends with! You know, you just don't understand the pressure that they can put on you."

Claire constantly makes nasty, hostile comments to Allison when she is proved wrong and embarrassed in front of everyone.

Freud would have suggested that her behavior illustrates the powerful influence of the id.

Concept #5

Self-efficacy

-Our sense of being competent and effective

in shaping our future

-The confidence in one's ability to organize and execute a given course of action to solve a problem or accomplish a task.

Throughout the movie, Claire had a strong sense of self-efficacy.

She did the following:

•Viewed challenging problems as tasks to be mastered

•Developed deeper interest in the activities in which the students participated in

•Formed a stronger sense of commitment to the students' interests and activities

•Recovered quickly from setbacks and disappointments
