In the late 1800's early 1900's, Isadora Duncan, "Mother of Modern Dance": Danced barefoot and wore simple clothing. She used Greek-inspired movements and developed dance theories.

Martha Graham

The second wave of modern dancers emerged in New York, which included Martha In the 1920's, Louis Horst introduced Graham to the work of Mary Wigman. The style of dancing Wigman in her words was "mostly dark, heavy, and earthbound." Her style was introduced to the United States in 1930 by her student, Hanya Holm.
Today most coregraphers "borrow freely" other dance forms from Ballet, Jazz, and many more.
The history of modern dance may be divided into three periods...
-One beginning about 1900
-One about 1930 (when it got more popular)
-One after World War II ended in 1945. (different cultures)
-"Self expression of humanity"

There was also many Afircan American Modern Dancers such as Alvin Ailey.
-Born in Texas in 1931
-His work was influenced by other cultures.
-Ailey used black traditions from the South American as a theme in his works.
Pilobolus began in 1971 as an outsider dance company and quickly became renowned the world over for its imaginative and athletic exploration of creative collaboration.
In the 1960's, a new group of choreographers emerged. They formed a group called the Judson Dance Theater.
