When it came to the Irish digging up the vegetable all they got back was rotted potatoes. The reason they rotted was because of airborne fungi which was originally shipped from North America to England.
Blight
Roughly about a million people immigrated from Ireland and to the 'new world'
In that year there was a 50% potato loss and the between 1846 and 1850 the population decreased by 25%
in 1846 the crop was a failure and had a poor harvest in 1847.
In 1845 the news of blight had reached London.
Blight is a plant disease caused by fungi
