Placements for the Student

IPRC Decision- Agree!

Five Options

Sign the IPRC form saying that you agree with the designation of the exceptionality and the placement

A regular class with indirect support

You have a maximum time of 30 days to sign and return

Student is placed in a regular class for whole day and teacher receives specialized consultative services

A regular class with resource assistance

The staff will notify the school that you agree and in IEP will be developed within 30 days of formal placement within the recommended program

Student is placed in regular class for all/most of day and receives specialized instruction from a qualified special education teacher

The IPRC Process and Placement for Students

A regular class with withdrawal assistance

Student is placed in regular class and receives instruction outside the class, for less than 50% of the school day from the special education teacher

A special education class with partial integration

Student is placed in a special education class for at least 50% of the school day, but is integrated with a regular class for at least one instructional period daily

A full-time special education class

Student is in special education class whole day

IPRC Decision- Disagree!

Two Options

IPRC Review

OR

Within 30 calendar days of receiving the IPRC decision the parent/guardian may appeal in writing to the Director of Education

Within 15 days of receiving decision request in writing for an additional meeting to re-evaluate decision. If after the second meeting you still disagree, you have 15 days to appeal the decision to the Director of Education

Parents/guardians will be given a written record of the recommendations of the committee

The IPRC PROCESS

The committee...

The school team or parent/guardian will request an IPRC by submitting a written request to the school principal

Describes and provides a statement of the student's strengths and needs

Within 15 Days of Principal Receiving Request...

The school principal must provide the Parent/Guardian with a copy of the Parent/Guardian Guide

At Least 10 Days Before the IPRC is Held...

Determines the appropriate level of support for the student including placement options

The principal or chair provides parent or guardian with a written notice of when the IPRC will meet (location, date and time). If this date or time does not work for them, they are able to reschedule.

At the IPRC Meeting...

Parent/Guardian, student 16 or over, principals, teachers, SERTs and professional support staff are all involved and invited to attend the meeting.

States the recommendation if student is placed in Special Education Class

Discuss and makes additional written recommendations of specific programs or services in order to meet needs of student

The board will establish a special education appeal board to hear your appeal. Three people, one who is selected by the parent/guardian

The chair of the appeal board will arrange a meeting, no later than 30 calendar days after the chair has been selected

The appeal board will receive the material reviewed by the IPRC and may interview any person who may be able to contribute info to the matter under the appeal

The parent/guardian and the child if 16 or older are entitled to be present and participate in all discussions

The Identification of Exceptional Pupils

Within 30 days... the school board will decide which actions to take with the recommendations. You may accept the decision of the board or appeal to a Special Education Tribunal

The Process...

The appeal board must make its recommendation within 3 days of the meeting's conclusion. They either agree with the IPRC and recommend the decision be implemented OR disagree with the IPRC and make a recommendation to the board. The appeal board reports its recommendations in writing to you and the school board with reasons

The school team will host a CASE CONFERENCE

An informal, problem-solving team meeting where all members who have been working with the student meet with the parent/guardian, and the child if they are 16 and older

Here the team will determine further interventions, the need for outside support, and decide if the student would benefit from being formally identified

  • If a student experiences difficulty meeting expectations...
  • School staff will communicate concerns, conduct in-class assessments, and plan and strategize with parents/guardians regularly
  • Teacher may also requet support from the school team (SERT- Special Education Resource Teacher and school administrator for programming ideas)
