Causes for Imperialism

How did the Industrial Revolution facilitate imperialism?

The Industrial Revolution facilitated imperialism by forming a need for raw materials and new markets. It also sparked a need to expand and get more land and spread religion to other countries.

There were various causes of imperialism, including economic desires, nationalism, and a wish to maintain a balance of power in Europe. The Industrial Revolution led to a growth of consumerism, which led to a need to have more raw materials and new markets. Furthermore, European nations were forced to found colonies around the world to compete with their fellow neighbors in order to maintain the balance of power and demonstrate their nationalism.

Ideological Context

Scientific knowledge had a profound impact on the language of imperialism, specifically the ideology of Social Darwinism concerning evolution. However, individuals began to be classified into certain races, which paved the way to racism and encourage white superiority over other races. Furthermore, the spread of Christianity around the world by missionaries was an ideology present during the prominence of European imperialism.
