What was the attitude towards marriage?
Objectives
~ Parents would arrange a match for you
~ The girls would be obedient to their father and later on to their husband
~ Parents would try to pick matches that you would get along with
~ Being that arranged marriages were all they knew, disobediance was uncommon
What was "marriage" in the 1500s?
~ Women were married off as soon as they could have children (12-14 years old)
~ Parental consent was needed
~ The legal age of consent was 21 and boys and girls would usually wait until then
~ Love was not involved
~ Marriage was a business agreement between two families
