The assignment of a text to a genre provides the audience with a key intertextual framework as each genre uses codes and conventions to link it to other genres.
This is most obvious in spoof versions of films such as 'The Spy Who Shagged Me' and 'Vampires Suck'.
In 1968 Roland Barthes announced 'the death of the author' and that 'a text's unity lies not in its origin but its destination' - in other words there is no such thing as an original text anymore.
