Nativism
the policy of protecting the interests of native-born or established inhabitants against those of immigrants. This was bad, as it created discrimination against immigrants, which led to prejudice and injustice in America. It still very much exists today (ahem donald trump) and is harmful to the democratic process.
"New" Immigrants
These immigrants came to America from areas that had not traditionally supplied settlers to the US. The lands of southern Europe and eastern Europe such as Italy, Russia, Poland and Greece, as well as Asian locales such as China and Japan. These immigrants were very good for America, even though they were not treated very well by America. They brought more workers for the work force, and their colorful cultures.
Violence in Labor unions
During the labor movement workers and business owners were feuding over working conditions. They fought to find common ground on which both could agree. The government gained the upper hand in controlling union activities. The strikers called for reform within the workplace for both conditions and wages, but their violent actions spoke louder than their words. Throughout the strikes, the public approved of the government's strong hold. This was bad- labor unions were something workers needed desparately, and their violence only disserved the unions' influence.
Growth of Labor Unions
Founded in 1866, the National Labor Union was the first attempt to organize all workers—skilled and unskilled. The NLU sought to standardize the work day to 8 hours and increase wages. However, it also sought equal rights for women and African-Americans. Although it did not last, its effects on America and the legacy it left for other labor unios to take its place were priceless and remain today.
Ellis Island and Angel Island
Electricity invention by Edison
immigrants who came to America through Ellis Island were from eastern and southern Europe. Angel Island was an immigration station where immigrants entering the United States were detained and interrogated. Ellis Island was good because it represented hope and a completion to many immigrants, while angel island i believe represented anxiety for many immigrants, because there was a possibility they would not be able to enter the country of their dreams (America!)
Edison radically began to change American Society as he began to supply the city of New York with electrical power in 1882. By 1889 he had formed the company that would come
to be known as GE (General Electric). Edison’s impact on the American home and the American workplace is immeasurable.
Jacob Riis and “How the Other Half Lives”
This process brought not only a fast and cheap way to mass produce steel, but also represented the start of industrialization in the US. It brought a faster and cheaper way to make steel to the US.
The Telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell, and forever changed the way in which people communicated. He brought a new industry and way of talking to loved ones to US.
Derogatory term of social criticism originally applied to certain wealthy and powerful 19th-century American businessmen, that they were cruel and exploited the weak to get wealthy. Positive to US, it brought a new awareness of big business.
This was a book by Riis, who was an investigative journalist, into the lives of the poor and immigrants who lived in tenements/horrible conditions.
W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington
George Eastman's invention of the camera forever changed the way people captured memory, and created another industry in the US. It was definitely good, what would we do without cameras?
A monopoly is created when a company gains all control of comodoties and services in a certain market. This allows for the manipulaton of product pricing. business owners make more of a profit, while taking advantage of the workers. It was negative for the US.
WEB DuBois was a civil rights leader who believed the Blacks could gain equality through becoming strong in the economy/business aspect of life, thereby showing the whites how useful and conductive to society Blacks were. Booker T. Washington believed that Blacks needed to fight for FULL equality, and not try to appease to the whites, but fight for what they deserved. DuBois definitely brought alot to America, namely the Atlanta Compromise (which was not necessarily good, at all), and Washington brought about huge change in civil rights as well- he founded Tuskegee University, National Negro Business League, Calhoun Colored School. Washington was more conductive to the civil rights movement than DuBois, because he did not preach passivity, but instead aggression and passion that was needed.
Vertical integration is the process in which several steps in the production and/or distribution of a product or service are controlled by a single company or entity, in order to increase that company’s or entity’s power in the marketplace. Horizontal integration (also known as lateral integration) simply means a strategy to increase your market share by taking over a similar company. This take over / merger / buyout can be done in the same geography or probably in other countries to increase your reach. While these strategies helped American business get more profit, it did not benefit the workers very much, and eliminated competition.
Big businesses used this to justify their growth and their workers' and competing businesses' failures. Claimed that they were surviving because they were fittest, while the other companies/workers were failing because they were too weak. Very negative, gave Big Money even more excuse to take advantage of the workers.
