Treatment

  • Specific treatment and prevention will depend on the cause.
  • Injections of electrolytes can be given to reduce iron levels.
  • Piglets may get additional iron from injections, dosages by mouth or by other methods

Facts

  • Symptoms occur very early and treatment can be given with pigs three days of age.
  • If there is less than 8g/100ml the piglet is becoming anaemic
  • Iron is an essential building block for humans and animals alike. It enables red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body.

Can it be controlled?

This disease is not contagious but is common in every newborn pig if there is not enough iron levels in the soil or food. It can be controlled by daily injections to either reduce or increase iron levels.
