Jewish Holidays

The Creation Story

These triangular fruit-filled cookies are supposed to represent Haman's three-cornered hat.

Purim is not subject to the sabbath-like restrictions on work that some other holidays are; however, some sources indicate that we should not go about our ordinary business on Purim out of respect for the holiday.

It is customary to hold carnival-like celebrations on Purim, to perform plays and parodies, and to hold beauty contests. It is said that the usual prohibitions against cross-dressing are lifted during this holiday. Americans sometimes refer to Purim as the Jewish Mardi Gras.

Other holidays include; Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and, Shemini Atzeret

Judaism believes that.....

The word of God brought everything into being: Haven and Earth, mountains and rivers, and every living thing. In the beginning, God called into existence the Haven and Earth. Within days, He shaped the world into the form it takes today.

Beliefs About Death

Life is valued above all else, all mankind is descended from one person so taking a life is considered killing the world and saving a life is like saving the world.

Jews aren't allowed to quicken death, (no mercy killing) suicide and assisted suicide is forbidden by Jewish law. Unless the patient is going to die eventually and is suffering.

Also may cease artificially prolonged life.

Judaism started in Israel.

Jews did well for many years.

Both the Romans and the Babylons destroyed the Jewish temple in separate years(around 500B.C) which sent the Jews away.

Judaism changed dramatically at this point.

Jews then spread out (Diaspora)

Later, Roman Christians made life bad for Jews.

Jews went to Babylonia in the 7th century and blended well with the culture.

Jews then went to Spain, Africa, and Egypt.

Christians took over Spain and Jews left.

In the early 20th century millions of poorly treated Jews came to America.

Six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust from 1939-45, and in 1948 Israel was given to the Jews.
